Labor Day Getaways | By Alice Markson

The end of summer is now within reach. For some, there is relief in knowing kids will return to school. The presence of more predictable routines inevitably brings *some* sanity back to our lives!

But, if you’re like me, you’re not quite ready to wave goodbye to summer. Even so, perhaps you’ve exhausted your typical summer haunt and wouldn’t mind exploring a destination that is not as familiar. Here are five picks from slightly lesser known New England locales to encourage you to explore our diverse array of regional getaway options.

Bretton Woods, NH. Yes, this is definitely known for it’s skiing, but the summer activity list is long, too! From swimming, to mountain biking and canopy zip lining - there is definitely plenty to keep you busy. Stickney’s Steakhouse and Chop Pub and Fabyan’s are the go to dining options just off the mountain. Rooms are still available at the Omni Hotel located at the base of the mountain.

Ogunquit, ME. Voted in 2012 as the #1 Beach Town in New England. This charming escape is just 1 ½ hours drive from Boston. This scenic destination has so much to offer - Marginal Way Walk is a beautiful 1 ¼ mile walking path along the coast. Ogunquit Beach, though often crowded, is a stunning place to watch the waves roll in off the Atlantic. For a quieter beach experience, head to the northern tip of Ogunquit Beach where you’ll find Footbridge Beach. The food in town is delicious - Lobster Shack and That Place are two favorites along with Love Shack for fresh juices. A few hotel rooms are still available so book quickly!

Berkshires, MA. Hurry and book your tickets to a special night at Tanglewood this Saturday, September 1. Wynton Marsalis Quintet and guest performance by Ellis Marsalis (his Dad) will take to the stage as part of the Tanglewood’s season closing weekend. After an evening of culture, take a stab at white water rafting on the Deerfield River or hike one of the 50+ miles of family friendly (dog too) trails in the area.

Little Compton, RI. Looking to unwind? This is the place. Rewind the clock and stroll along the roads with overgrown grasses, stop at local farm stands for fresh fruit and veggies along with delectable homemade pies. Don’t expect to find a plethora of stores in town - downtown consists of only a handful of stores. But that’s the beauty of this place. There is a great winery in town with a delicious cafe.

Twin Farms, VT. For those looking for a ‘go big or go home’ weekend escape this is the place...and there are still rooms available! I spent one of my most memorable weekends away here two years ago. This full service, 5 star boutique hotel nestled in Barnard, VT offers it all. From private fly fishing lessons to romantic hikes and endless farm to table meals and cocktails, just to name a few. Nothing is too much of an ask for the staff. This all inclusive resort (don’t think Sandals!) will have you yearning to return year after year.

Whatever your Labor Day plans are, we wish you a fun and safe weekend and look forward to seeing you this fall in the city.
