Ink Block Neighborhood

South End

Overview

The South End’s unique Ink Block neighborhood is still developing its tangible landscape as well as its cultural underpinnings. With easy access to premiere shopping, terrific restaurants, comprehensive transportation, and appealing green spaces, the Ink Block area has expanded from its original six-acre development site situated at the former headquarters of the Boston Herald. A former working-class neighborhood, the district turned, in the 1950’s, towards industrial and commercial uses. Today’s iteration of the Ink Block represents a return to the vibrant, pre-industrial days with hundreds of units of housing and a smattering of new eating and drinking establishments.

Location

Situated south of Boston’s Theatre District, the Ink Block lies between Fort Point, South Boston and the balance of the South End to its west. Back Bay and the Financial district are very much walkable from the Ink Block as well. Pinned between Herald and East Berkeley Streets, the Ink Block boasts glimpses of the Bass River, which feeds into the Fort Point Channel.

Market

The emerging Ink Block market cannot easily be pinned down. New construction opportunities abound, primarily through mid to high rise buildings with elevators and concierges - quite different from the more traditional brownstone stock that covers the South End. The average sale price per square foot has been $1,170 but expect that number to rise as development continues.

Lifestyle

The Ink Block boasts a living experience defined by both vibrancy and convenience. This rapidly-growing community blends notes of Boston’s history with a decidedly urban bent. The Ink Block’s signature apartments and condominiums offer up a rooftop pool and elite amenity package alongside myriad retail opportunities, fitness studios, and a host of eateries, groceries, and resto-bars. Whole Foods has recently settled in the Ink Block, and today’s residents might enjoy yoga at CorePower Yoga, cocktails at the Bar Mezzana, and eastern fusion cuisine at Fuji - all in a day’s work in the upbeat Ink Block.
